Legal Learning Session: Mental Health Law Update

The Mental Health Act 1983 provides the main framework for detaining people in hospital for treatment of mental disorders. There are plans to reform the Act in order to reduce rising detention rates and racial disparities in the use of the legislation and to increase patient choice and control. There have also been a number of court judgments concerning various aspects of the Act.
