Implementing the Liberty Protection Safeguards

15:30 - 16:30

The Mental Capacity (Amendment) Act 2019 provides for the repeal of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and their replacement with a new scheme called the Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS). The LPS are intended to provide a more streamlined and efficient process for authorising the deprivation of liberty of those who lack the relevant capacity. Authorisations can be given by NHS bodies and local authorities, and the scheme can be applied in any setting and apply to multiple arrangements.

The government has announced that the LPS will come into force on 1 October 2020. This interactive session, hosted by Community Care Inform, will enable you to:

  • understand the key feature of the LPS scheme
  • consider the main challenges for social workers
  • discuss contentious issues, including the role of care home managers
  • look ahead to the transitional arrangements
  • think about the next steps for you and your organisations to consider
